Phillies Take First Interstate Game Against Pirates

BRIGHTON — Fighting off intermittent rain, the Phillies and Pirates battled it out at Cassidy Field with the Phillies eking out a 7-6 win.
Much like the weather, it was a sloppy game with the two teams combining for eleven errors. Both teams’ starters pitched complete games and did enough to win, but were lacking the support of their defense.
The Pirates got on the board first and threw up a run in each of the first four innings. They finally got a crooked number on the board in the fifth, thanks to a Dan “Junior” Segel bases loaded double. Unfortunately, it would be the final time they would score in the game.
The Phillies, on the other hand, had their biggest offensive output in the third, posting four runs thanks in large part to some poor fielding by the Pirates.
“We gave them five or six outs that inning,” said Coach Walter. “When you do that against a good team, they’re going to hurt you.”
Segel’s two-run double tied it, but the Phillies were able to scrape one across in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.
The Pirates made one more attempt to get back in the game in the 7th. Lead-off hitter Saad Khalid managed to get on base to lead off the inning. However, after an estimated 17 pickoff attempts, the PPoP were unable to advance him past first base.
Offensively, the Pirates were led by Khalid and Jay Kreisberg notching two hits apiece.
The loss brings the Pirates’ season record to 5-2, while the Phillies are 4-3.
